Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Aneurysms form when the lining of the abdominal aorta wall becomes thinner. As it expands, it may become so thin that it ruptures. Surgery is possible – the weakened aortic wall is replaced with a manmade tube (a graft). The aneurysm can be there up to 20 years without being diagnosed – there are no symptoms until it ruptures causing serious and potentially fatal internal bleeding. A CT scan will confirm AAA. Risk factors include smoking, age (60 or older), high blood pressure, diabetes, family history. If a family member has had AAA, it is strongly suggested to have a CT scan. Please talk to your physician. . If you have other questions, you may call me.
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year,
