Citizen in the Nation and Alien to the World

Speaking:
Jim Doherty
Sermon Series:
Hope in Crisis and Comfort to those in Exile

Sermon Description:
The Apostle John in his first epistle says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world…for the world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever” (1John 2:15f). We are born into this world and sent by the Lord with a message of love and hope to it, but our residence on earth is temporary and to some degree foreign. We have a citizenship that ties us to another king and another fealty We have a conviction of identity that supercedes national or even our family ties and loyalties: we are children of the King of kings. All of that makes the Christian experience one of exile by definition. To what character of relationship is God calling us,? What does it mean to live as a resident alien in this world? And for what do we hope as we wait the call to take up our residence in that land to which we belong?

Caring Conversation: Talk about strength and prosperity.   What makes us popular or un-popular with other people?  Who and what do we work to trust?

Devotion: Read: Jeremiah 17:5-10 and Luke 6:17-26.

For Adults and Youth:  How can we have high expectations of others while knowing that ultimately people will disappoint us?  What prosperity might we fail to recognize?

For Children and Families:  How do you know who you can trust?  When will people let you down, and what can you do about it when they do?  Check out the Great Salt Lake at Google.  What kind of trees grow there?  Then check out www.utah.com/fish/provo_river.htm  Trees?  Both locations are in Utah, but what makes them so different?  How does what we feed ourselves spiritually make a difference in how we grow?

Pray:   Google Luther’s Morning . Pray this prayer together this week.  Consider taping it to the dashboard  of your car.

Ritual/Tradition:  Make this summer a time to STOP, to Spend Time Outside Playing.  Whether you are an adult or a child, summer is a great time to refresh your mind and simply have fun and what better place to do that then outdoors.  Spend at least 1 hour everyday outdoors playing.  Playing can be walking, reading a book, basketball, eating ice cream, camping, swimming, etc). The important thing is to STOP!

Service:  Neighborhoods are full of different people & different needs.  In every community God calls us to help, to know one another.  This week outside do something for your community; take a walk and pick up trash, plant a tree, mow someone’s lawn, etc.  Notice where you live & do something for it.
